About CDE2503 - Cities in Nature 🌴

This course will provide students with an understanding of the “Sustainable Environment” outcome of the Singapore Liveability Framework (LF) that was developed by the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC). It will address what sustainability is, and how it affects liveability. Most importantly, students will understand how cities address complex issues.

This course will cover the themes of Climate Resilience and Use of Limited Resources, covering topics such as water, green, waste, food, climate mitigation, climate adaptation, and energy resilience. Using case studies, students will glean insights on how to balance different stakeholders while solving complex urban issues.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand key principles taught within the themes of Climate Resilience and the Use of Limited Resources that shapes the development of a sustainable and climate resilient city.
  • Identify problem(s) that prevents a city from achieving the Sustainable Environment outcome of the LF.
  • Formulate solution(s) using key principles highlighted in the two broad themes of Climate Resilience and the Use of Limited Resources to address problem(s) identified.
  • Analyse and evaluate solution(s) with the use of the simulation and prediction model InVEST to highlight benefits and trade-offs.

Themes

Lectures

  • We have 7 seminars in total.
  • These seminars will be split into two themes.
  • Seminars will be held live in-person at SDE3-LT422 and will be recorded.

Studios

  • We have 5 studios in total. They are either working studio where you get to have discussion session with your team, SL and TA, or presentation studio where you present your findings.
  • Studios will happen on weeks where there is no lecture.
  • Information about the studios can be found on Canvas or on Github
  • Feel free to write to your SL and TA if you have any questions.

Office Hours

  • Weekly fixed office hours can be found on the Schedule tab, and will be held either virtually or in-person depending on your needs.
  • Prof. He has an open-door policy. So feel free to drop by Prof. He’s office for any reason, including course material clarification, questions on tutorials, and projects, or even just to hang out.

  • Pre-lecture readings and/or video materials for each week can be found on Canvas
  • Focus on essential readings for each week.
  • Supplementary materials will be for you to deepen your knowledge at your own time.

  1. Please be punctual for seminars. Attendance is compulsory and will be taken. 

  2. Studio project will consist of 2 components: Individual (15%) and Group (45%). Attendance for studios are also compulsory. Refer to here for the studio grading rubrics.
